Paramount chief of Wenchi warns encroachers to vacate government lands

The paramount chief of Wenchi Traditional Area of the Bono Region, Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako III, has cautioned encroachers on government lands to vacate or face eviction.

Speaking to the media, Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako mentioned areas such as the Wenchi Animal Husbandry land, former Wenchi Tomato Factory (TOMACAN) land, Wenchi Agricultural College land and Akrobi Irrigation land, as some of the lands prone to encroachment.

Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako further cautioned officials of the Town and Country Planning Department and the Wenchi Municipal Assembly to stop what he termed the “illegal rezoning” of Wenchi.

“The Town and Country Planning Department has no right or power to release any piece of land, and even the Wenchi Municipal Assembly cannot do that because they don’t own land; it’s the traditional council that owns Wenchi lands,” Osagyefo stressed.

“Under my watch, the traditional council will not allow encroachers to take over government lands meant for agriculture and development purposes of our municipality,” he said.

His warning comes after some residents of Wenchi threatened to sue the Wenchi Municipal director of the Town and Country Planning Department for illegally allocating portions of a 100-foot road as building plots to some individuals.

The group, led by William Brown, have been up in arms over the alleged actions of the Town and Country planning officer to ensure justice and fairness in land administration within the Wenchi Municipality.

Osagyefo Ampem Anye Amoampong Tabrako, commenting on the issue, confirmed one of the group’s allegations that there has been no stakeholder engagement in the rezoning of Wenchi,.

He urged the inhabitants of Wenchi and its environs to stop dealing with the Town and Country Planning Department in matters pertaining to land acquisition, as the Wenchi Traditional Council has a secretariat for stool land to deal with any land issues.

“I will entreat those who want to acquire a parcel of land in Wenchi to go to the secretariat for proper documentation,” said Osagyefo Tabrako
