The New Patriotic Party (NPP) is founded on liberal democratic principles and the philosophy of Danquah-Busia-Dombo, named after three influential Ghanaian political figures: J B Danquah, Kofi Abrefa Busia, and Simon Diedong Dombo

1. Origins and formation

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) was formed on July 28, 1992, from the ashes of the Progress Party and the Popular Front Party. The NPP’s roots can be traced back to the United Gold Coast Convention (UGCC), which played a pivotal role in Ghana’s fight for independence.

2. Ideological Foundation

The NPP is founded on liberal democratic principles and the philosophy of Danquah-Busia-Dombo, named after three influential Ghanaian political figures: J.B. Danquah, Kofi Abrefa Busia, and Simon Diedong Dombo. This ideology emphasizes individual freedom, rule of law, and free-market policies.

3. First presidential victory

The NPP won its first presidential election in December 2000, with John Agyekum Kufuor defeating the incumbent Jerry John Rawlings’ National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, John Atta Mills. Kufuor’s presidency marked a significant shift in Ghana’s political landscape.

4. Economic reforms

Under President Kufuor (2001-2009), the NPP implemented significant economic reforms, including the introduction of the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Capitation Grant, and the School Feeding Programme. These initiatives aimed to improve healthcare and education for all Ghanaians.

The current NPP government under President Akufo-Addo can also boast of being the most transformative government in the Fourth Republic with the implementation of the Free Senior High School (Free SHS), One District One Factory, Agenda 111 and many others.

5. Historic election victory

In 2016, the NPP made history when its candidate, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, defeated the incumbent president, John Dramani Mahama of the NDC, with a decisive margin. This victory marked the first time a sitting Ghanaian president had lost a re-election bid.

6. Leadership in digitalisation

The NPP government under President Akufo-Addo has been at the forefront of digital transformation in Ghana. Initiatives such as the introduction of the Ghana Card, mobile money interoperability, and the digital property address system are part of the party’s commitment to modernizing the country’s economy and governance.

7. Party yymbolism

The NPP’s symbol is the elephant, which represents strength, wisdom, and reliability. The party’s colors—red, white, and blue—reflect its commitment to patriotism, unity, and progress.

As the NPP celebrates its 32nd anniversary, these lesser-known facts highlight the party’s contributions to Ghana’s political, economic, and social development.
