Kumasi: MTN marks 15 years of MoMo with major anti-fraud push and expansion celebrations

MTN Ghana says it is intensifying efforts to tackle MoMo fraud, a significant barrier to digital and financial inclusion. general manager, MTN Northern Business District, Nii Adortey Mingle emphasised the company’s commitment to combating fraud through robust security measures and awareness campaigns.

Speaking at the launch of this year’s edition of mobile money month in Kumasi (7 August) under the theme, ”Empowering Communities, celebrating 15 years of progressive financial and digital inclusion,” Mingle reiterated MTN’s commitment to ensuring a safe digital environment for Ghanaians urging customers to be vigilant and protect their pins.

“Fraud remains one of the prevalent issues that continues to hinder our work of promoting digital and financial inclusion in the country. MOMO fraud is an issue we are very passionate about at Mobile Money Limited, and we will continue to work with all stakeholders through sensitiation, awareness initiatives and will continue to invest in robust security measures to combat it and protect our valued customers.”

“Let me use this platform to emphasize that every customer is the first and last line of defense. We need to protect our peers and avoid clicking on unsolicited links, responding to fake SMS messages or following the instructions of random callers. We remain committed to providing great customer experience to all our customers regardless of their location,” he added.

He also emphasized since the establishment and introduction of the Ghana card, all forms of theft and impersonating persons for fraud had significantly reduced.

As MTN MoMo Ghana celebrates 15 years since its inception, the General Manager also highlighted the milestone achieved by the company citing making financial services been easily accessible to every Ghanaian through the power of the mobile phone.

He recalled years where the traditional banking services were inaccessible to a significant segment of the population, particularly those in rural and underserved areas. He said for many Ghanaians, conducting basic financial transactions was a challenge, which hindered economic growth and personal empowerment. However, introduction of Mtn momo had indeed made a significant impact and difference.

The event also saw beneficiaries, individuals, groups and association who had grossly benefited from the use of Mtn Momo in making transactions.

The chairman of the Ashanti Online Driver’s Union said MTN had rolled over 300 merchant SIM cards for easy payment after patronizing their services. Leaders of the petty trader’s association also commended the telecom giant adding that the impact of Mtn Momo was far reaching. For them, most transactions between customers and traders are done through the digital platform, “MTN MOMO.”

The month-long celebration will involve other market launches in other respective regions, and a float of activities through their principal streets.

Other events to mark the celebration include new service launch, exciting products, loan products, new my MOMO app, customer promotion, exciting giveaways, MOMO fraud campaign, skills training for SMEs, awards night to reward various stakeholders for their performance over the period.
