Greater Accra Regional Minister, Daniel Nii Kwartei Titus Glover, has announced that construction at Jamestown Harbour is complete, with only the official commissioning by President Nana Akufo-Addo remaining.
The Jamestown Fishing Harbour project, which began in August 2020, involved extensive work, including the dredging of 100,000 cubic metres of the harbour basin and the construction of 1,251 metres of hydraulic structures.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Wednesday (7 August), Glover detailed the project’s benefits for the local fishing community.
“Today, when you go to the Jamestown fishing harbour, you have an ice plant, you have a fish market, you have a clinic, you have a day nursery, you have a net mending wharf for the fishermen, you go and sell your fish and if in case you will not be able to sell all your catch, you make sure you send it to the cold store to go and get it preserved for you. The next morning, you come and pay something, then you go and go and sell,” he said. “This is how we want to make fishing in Ga Mashie so nice to the people.”
Glover added that the only step remaining is for the president and Transport Minister Kwaku Ofori Asiamah to set a date for the commissioning. Once completed, the Ghana Ports & Harbours Authority (GPHA) staff will begin operations.
“No, it is not yet operational,” Glover clarified. “So the president and the Minister for Transport will look for a date, then we will go and commission it, then [GPHA] will move its staff into the fishing harbour, then we will start operating.”
