Industry and Academia must collaborate to enhance growth, says Prof Eric Opoku Mensah

The vice chancellor for the University of Media, Arts and Communication, Institute of Journalism, UniMAC Prof Eric Opoku Mensah has called on industry and academia to foster more collaboration to enhance growth in the industry.

This call was made during the third UNIMAC Academic Practitioner conference on Thursday (11 July).

The conference with the theme “Synergy for Transformation” sought to digest the role of synergy and the possible transformation it can generate between academics and practitioners.

In a speech delivered by Dr Rebecca Ohene Asah on his behalf, Prof Opoku Mensah said “… I call upon the university as an institution of higher education to foster more collaborations between industry and academia. Such partnerships are essential for driving innovation, growth and the development of a highly skilled workforce.”

“… I would like to reiterate our commitment to fostering a collaborating environment where academia and industry work hand in hand. Where the gap is bridged, where we can foster and bring out the full benefits of both,” he added.

Also speaking on the sidelines of the event, lecturer at UNIMAC-IJ, Bright Senanu, urged students to add value to the certificates they acquire in school.

“The knowledge gained in school after four or three years of higher education, I think the greatest gift aside from money is what we call soft skills. For instance: empathy, time management; those are key values that are lost on us as a society and as a culture.

“We don’t respect time, we don’t obey time, we don’t value time and so time management, empathy, creativity are all soft skills that our dear students should acquire alongside the knowledge, the theories, and the concepts they’ve learned in the classroom and once they’ve learned to appreciate these two dimensions and bulk them up together, they’ll be ever ready for the world,” he said.

On her part, the manager of public affairs, Nuclear Power Ghana, Bellona-Gerard Vittor-Quao, emphasized on the need for free information accessibility for students.

“Information Technology has come to stay with us, and it’s going to get faster as the year go by. We will therefore encourage our educational institutions to make e-learning affordable and available. In this age and time, access to information must be encouraged, once the students are exposed to the information, the institutions can set up strategies to guide them in managing the knowledge and the content of it.”

“So I would really recommend that at the tertiary institutions, information accessibility should be free so that students can have access to it so lecturers can also help them to manage it,” she reiterated.

The conference was organised by level 300 top-up public relations, PR students of the faculty of public relations, advertising and marketing (FO-PAM).

Some speakers who attended the event included the director at the directorate of research, innovation and development, UniMAC, Professor Etse Sikanku, lecturer at the department of PR of UniMAC-IJ, Iddrisu Fuseini, and a lecturer at the marketing department of UniMAC-IJ, Nii Nookwei Tackie.
