An Environmental Health Expert, Owusu Appiah has shared some effects of the galamsey activities currently ongoing in Ghana on the health of Ghanaians.
During an interview on Onua FM, the environmental health expert disclosed that research has discovered that most diseases including the increasing cases of kidney failures in both adults and children are caused by galamsey activities.
He lamented about the current change in weather; adding that one of the factors preventing rainfall is that galamsayers have cut down a lot of trees, especially in the forest areas for galamsey activities.
“Galamsey has dire effects on the country. It is a big problem and comes with big consequences. In the next five years, we won’t have potable water to drink if this continues. Brain cancer is now prevalent in Ghana because the mercury these galamsayers use for this activity ends up poisoning fish in these water bodies. When anyone eats these fishes with mercury, it runs through the blood and the brain and damages the central nervous system.” He warned.
According to Owusu Appiah, these activities are the reason why babies born in these mining communities end up being deformed.
