Asamoah Gyan has disclosed that he used to lobby for Black Stars games to be laid at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.According to the former Black Stars captain, while Kumasi has rightfully earned the tag of the ‘spiritual home’ of Ghana football and therefore deserved to host Ghana games, he often appealed to the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to send games there due to his love for Kumasi Asante Kotoko and the people of Asanteman."Because I love the club, I made sure that we played Ghana matches here," Gyan, who played at the 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cup said on Kumasi-based Pure FM.Asamoah Gyan, who remains the country's all-time leading goal scorer announced his retirement from football in June 2023.Black Stars 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers are expected to be staged at the Baba Yara Stadium since that is the only stadium that meets the criteria of CAF and FIFA.In the 2025 AFCON qualifiers, Ghana have been housed in Group F alongside Angola, Niger and Sudan.
