The Ministry of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development, led by deputy minister Ekow Vincent Assafuah, has launched the Homowo clean-up exercise to enhance sanitation in Accra in preparation for the Homowo Festival.
The initiative underscores the government’s commitment to maintaining a clean and healthy environment.
“We are excited to be part of the launch of the Homowo Clean-Up Exercise,” Assafuah announced on Friday (June 21), emphasising the significance of the event. The exercise aims to ensure Accra is clean and tidy for the festival, reinforcing the adage, “Cleanliness is next to Godliness.” All Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs) are urged to participate.
The ministry has pledged to provide resources to support MMDAs in their efforts to keep the city clean. This initiative complements the ongoing “Clean your Frontage” campaign, which has seen significant efforts under the leadership of the Minister of the Interior and former Greater Accra Regional Minister.
Commending King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II for his dedication to maintaining cleanliness during the festival, Assafuah assured the public of the ministry’s full support. “We wish to commend the leadership of His Majesty, King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II, for his commitment to keeping Accra clean and healthy during this celebration,” he stated.
The Homowo Festival, a reflection of Ghana’s rich cultural heritage, symbolises resilience and community spirit. Participating in the clean-up exercise honours this heritage and promotes a cleaner, healthier environment. Assafuah highlighted the integral role of cleanliness and sanitation in national development, contributing to public health, tourism, and overall quality of life.
The deputy minister called on all citizens, traditional leaders, and community groups to actively engage in the clean-up exercise. “Your involvement is crucial to its success and to the betterment of our communities,” he said. He also encouraged the adoption of sustainable practices such as proper waste management and recycling beyond the festival.
Assafuah expressed hope that the spirit of Homowo would inspire continuous efforts towards a prosperous and clean Ghana. “May the spirit of Homowo guide and manifest in all our endeavors! Afi oooo Afi,” he said, thanking everyone for their collective efforts.
