GJA insists a state of emergency must be declared in fight against GALAMSEY

The Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has told President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo that a state of emergency must be declared due to the state of water bodies and forest reserves in Ghana as a result of galamsey.

The association believes that the President has failed to fulfil his promise of fighting galamsey regardless of the numerous promises to end the menace.

President of the Association Mr Albert Kwabena Dwumfour, who made this known in a speech at the Ghana Journalists Awards held in Accra, expressed his optimism that the President will fulfil his promise before his tenure ends in three months.

“We are aware that some time ago, Mr President, the father of the nation, made a firm vow to stop galamsey but regrettably that promise has not been fulfilled. Mr President, you have barely three months until the end of your administration, and we are hopeful that you’ll deal with the problem before you leave office.

Naa Chairman, Your Excellency, we still maintain that a state of emergency must be declared over our water bodies and all planned and active mine concessions overlapping with river buffers should be abrogated and all mining activities within 100m buffer of all rivers and streams should be halted with immediate effect. We also reiterate that LI2462 should be repealed immediately,” he demanded.
