Ghana’s Vincent Torgah triumphs at Rowland Adewumi Golf Classic in Abuja

Ghanaian golf star Vincent Torgah claimed victory at the first-ever Rowland Adewumi Golf Classic, held from 13–15 June at the IBB International Golf and Country Club in Abuja, Nigeria.

Torgah, a seasoned competitor with multiple West African Golf Tour championships under his belt, secured the title with a gross score of 219, besting his closest rival, Godwin Okoko of IBB Golf Club.

Torgah, representing Tema Golf Club, demonstrated his skill in a tightly contested tournament.

This latest victory adds to his impressive career, which boasts over 35 titles and accolades, such as the 2019 Golfer of the Year from both the Sports Writers Association of Ghana (SWAG) and the Ghana Excellence Awards.

Reflecting on his performance, Torgah acknowledged the intense competition. “It was not easy; it was tough and highly competitive,” he said. “I was a bit shaken at the beginning because I don’t know the kind of people competing, but along the way I realised it was fun. I quickly adjusted myself and after [a] few mistakes, I came back strong, and to the glory of God, I won it.”

He also highlighted the need for more tournaments, like the Rowland Adewumi Golf Classic, to foster the sport’s development in the region. “I think we need more of such tournaments across the West African region to further develop the sport,” Torgah added.

The three-day event celebrated sponsor Rowland Adewumi’s 50th birthday and featured a prize pool worth ₦20 million, among other awards. In a gesture of goodwill, cash donations were also made to several orphanages in Abuja.
