Ghana needs an economist as President – UPSA Professor

The Dean of Accounting and Finance at the University of Professional Studies, Accra (UPSA), Professor Isaac Boadi, has emphasized that between an economist and a communicator, Ghana is better off having the economist as president.

The accounting and finance don expressed confidence in Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia leading Ghana because of his economics background as against the presidential candidate of the opposition NDC, John Dramani Mahama, whom he described as a communicator.

“Let us be honest with ourselves, between an economist and a communicator, who should be handed an economy to run? The economist has the upper hand over the communicator because of his field of expertise and study” he stated.

“It is about time we did away with electing people into office just for them to be speaking grammar to us when they don’t understand and cannot grasp the real issues of the economy. With Bawumia as president, we are assured of someone who understands the nuances of the economy and can better proffer measures to dealing with the challenges therein. Ghana’s economy will be in a safer pair of hands with Bawumia as president” he explained further.

He added that with the background of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, there would not be much need for consultations when issues of the economy come up. The same thing cannot be said of John Mahama who will have to rely on others with knowledge about the economy before he can act.

“Imagine a crisis looming large and you have Bawumia as president, you are assured of a better solution or preventive measures than Mahama who has no knowledge about economics. We will be gambling with the economy if we elect Mahama as president, and that, to me, is dangerous” he added.

“Let me also state this before I am misconstrued that I am not saying a non-economist cannot be president, that’s not my argument, I am saying that looking at where we are coming from and where we are headed, an economist is suitable to lead Ghana than someone who is not an economist” he explained.

The UPSA top gun likened the Bawumia/Mahama dichotomy to a situation where an expert in a particular field is required to fill in a position but only one of them has the expertise to do so and asked if the one without any knowledge in the field would be considered.

“If you have an accounting firm and need one accountant to fill a vacant position, will you go in for someone who read geography or psychology at the university for that job? The answer is a big No. You will rather hire an accountant. This is the kind of situation we have on our hands now. We need an economist to lead Ghana, and that person is Bawumia. A communications expert will do a poor job handling an economy” he indicated.

Professor Boadi said that Mahama’s lack of appreciation of the nuanced nature of economic management led to Ghana’s economy being plunged into an abyss when he was president. He called on Ghanaians to elect Bawumia as president because of his expertise in the field of economics, amongst other reasons, and not make the mistake to return John Mahama to power.

Professor Isaac Boadi said these when he appeared on Asaase Radio’s Townhall Talk on Friday, 4 October 2024, on the topic ‘Managing Ghana’s Economy; Has NPP done a decent job?

On whether the NPP has done a decent job in managing the Ghanaian economy, Professor Boadi emphasized that though there have been challenges largely due to extraneous factors, a lot has been achieved under the circumstances and believes more can be achieved if the NPP is retained in office.
