The Chief Fisherman at Tema Manhean, Nii Odamettey has expressed worry over the effects galamsey activities is having on fishing communities.
While speaking to Accra-based Citi Fm during a Community Forum segment, the fisherman stated that the galamsey activities have crippled the State.
While lamenting about the effects of galamsey, he stated that the it has affected the fishing community as many fishermen find it difficult getting a bounty catch as compared to previous years.
“The galamsey activities are affecting the fishing communities. Because all rivers and lagoons have their flows into the sea. So the mercury is entering the sea. Go to Western Region and see, all the chemicals like mercury have entered the sea. Mercury from these mining operations is entering the sea and harming the fish, “ He disclosed.
He stated that due to the mercury affecting the fish species in the sea, people living outside the mining community are at higher risk compared to those living in mining areas.
