The Catholic Archdiocese of Accra has asked that their environmental prayer walk must not be misconstrued.

They have clarified that it has nothing to do with the Catholic Bishops Conference.

Archbishop John Kwofie Bonaventure who spoke on the issue, noted that some political elements are trying their best to hijack their environmental prayer walk but that will not be countenanced.

“It is not the Catholic Bishops Conference and we do not support either the Organized Labour’s strike. The galamsey issue is not a political issue. It is an environmental, social, community, industrial, it is work situation, employment situation, and it has a lot of ramifications.

About 4 million people are involved in galamsey directly or indirectly. In the legal mining directly or indirectly. A lot of activities are related to the mining, legal or illegal. A dialogue with all stakeholders will be able to solve the problem. So it’s not only a political issue, it is not only politicians involved. Surely politics can do something, but it should not be seen as the government failing to stop galamsey.

All of us collectively who are cutting wood and destroying the environment are also involved. So the Bishop Conference has not embarked on a demonstration as such. It is the Accra Archdiocese embarking on a Prayer walk,” he said.

The Accra Archdiocese has hinted that there will be an environmental prayer walk on October 11, 2024 to drum home the need to end illegal mining in the country.
