The Member of Parliament for Ejura/Sekyedumase, Alhaji Bawa Braimah, has called on traditional leaders, particularly the Ejurahene, Barima Osei Hwedie II, to avoid involvement in partisan politics, stressing the importance of safeguarding the integrity of the chieftaincy institution.
This follows allegations that the Ejurahene had directed locals to vote for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia, and parliamentary candidate Gifty Ndomah.
While Braimah expressed doubts about the authenticity of the directive, he urged caution.
“I want to use this medium to plead with Nananom that the chieftaincy institution is very respected, and we need to protect the sanctity of that institution. For us, we are politicians, but the moment a chief meddles in partisan politics to the extent of campaigning for a political party in villages, it creates challenges. Whenever chaos erupts, would you have that moral authority to call anybody to order?” he questioned.
“I don’t want to believe he issued that directive. But if you are a chief and you engage in partisan politics, we will respond with equal measure,” he warned.
The lawmaker made these remarks during the commissioning of a three-unit classroom block and a mechanized borehole at Fakawa on Wednesday (27 November).
Alhaji Braimah reiterated the importance of neutrality among chiefs, emphasizing that their role in ensuring peace and unity is vital and should remain untainted by political affiliations.
It is not clear whether the office of the Chief of Ejura’s attention has been drawn to the development.
Mahama visit
The Ejura/Sekyedumase Constituency has become a focal point in the political battle ahead of the December election.
In 2020, the NDC narrowly retained the seat with 51% of the vote, but increasing support for the NPP and allegations of traditional leaders backing its candidate Gifty Ndomah have intensified the competition.
The development has prompted former President John Dramani Mahama to visit the constituency, as efforts to galvanize support for Braimah intensify amid a growing campaign to unseat Bawa Braimah.
Mr Mahama’s visit on Saturday (30 November) included meetings with local stakeholders and community engagements aimed at countering the momentum of his opponents.
