Dr. Gideon Boako, Spokesperson for Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, has voiced strong concerns over the recent Democracy Hub protest, suggesting that its motivations were more political than environmental.
In an interview on Peace FM’s Kokrokoo show on Friday, September 27, Dr. Boako remarked that while demonstrations are part of Ghana’s democratic culture, the behaviour exhibited during this particular protest raises questions about its true purpose.
He pointed out the chaotic scenes during the protest, including property damage, clashes with the police, and the blocking of major roads, including those leading to the 37 Military Hospital. He questioned whether such actions were a legitimate way to push for accountability from those in power, stating, “If the intention was to get persons in authority to act, is that how to go about it?”
Furthermore, Boako expressed skepticism about the organizers’ motives, claiming that their actions indicated a political agenda disguised as a protest against galamsey (illegal mining). “Anyone leading a protest and believing that if any human being dies, it is nothing, means their demonstration was more political than conservationists,” he said.
As the country approaches the elections, Boako suggested that demonstrations like these could be politically charged rather than focused on genuine causes like environmental conservation. He argued that the use of galamsey as a “decoy” undermined the credibility of the protest.
Boako’s remarks have sparked a debate about the line between activism and political manoeuvring in the context of Ghana’s current political landscape.
The demonstration organized by the Democracy Hub, titled the “Occupy Julorbi House” protest, took place in Accra in September 22, 2023. The protest aimed to highlight issues like illegal mining (galamsey), corruption, and general governance concerns under the current government. However, the event sparked significant tension and confrontation with the authorities, leading to a series of incidents that caught public attention.
