Calls for forensic audit of voters register premature—EC

Ghana’s Electoral Commission has told the opposition NDC that Ghana’s Voters Register does not need a forensic audit.

To the commission, claims of the register not being credible does not hold water.

They are of the view that the voter exhibition exercise is an audit in itself and offers an avenue for all discrepancies to be addressed.

The Commission in charge of organizing elections in the country drew the attention of the opposition NDC to the 2016 register, which according to them contained photos of plants and animals but they failed to call for a forensic audit.

The commission denied claims that there is precedence that the register has been audited in the past

“Contrary to what is being alluded, since 1992 the voter register has never been audited.”

“A forensic audit is not what is needed at this time. It is premature. The Commission wishes to inform the general public that the voters’ exhibition exercise in itself is an audit. The exhibition offers an avenue for the auditing of the register.

It unearths discrepancies and allows for prescribed legal processes to correct the discrepancies. Perhaps this is the first time the NDC has taken an interest in the register. Otherwise one would have expected them to call for an audit of the 2016 register, which contained photos of plans and animals representing voters. Contrary to what is being alluded, since 1992 the voters register has never been audited,” the EC’s Deputy Commissioner in Charge of Operations, Mr. Sammuel Tettey told the press on Thursday September 12.
