BMW to launch first hydrogen-powered car in 2028 with Toyota partnership

BMW will introduce its first hydrogen-powered car in the year 2028, based on common fuel cell technology developed along with Toyota Motor Corp, the carmaker said on Thursday (5 September).

The hydrogen car will be an existing model from BMW with the addition of a hydrogen fuel cell variant, but the model, price, and volume of production remain unidentified.

BMW’s CEO Oliver Zipse made sure to mention that the car would show just how technological development is shaping up the future in terms of mobility.

This cooperation with Toyota will make the cost of the development lower and create under its belt a fuel cell drive system able to be used not only by passenger cars but also commercial vehicles.

Among German carmakers, BMW leads from the front in hydrogen technology. It has already been test-driving the iX5 Hydrogen, a hydrogen-driven car with an epic range of 500 km, which can be refuelled within three to four minutes.

BMW is working on both fuel cell and battery-powered prototypes for vehicles, hedging its bets as clarity on the dominant “green” technology of the future emerges.

Fuel-cell vehicles utilise an electric motor for propulsion, similar to electric vehicles, but generate electricity from a fuel cell stack where hydrogen is split through a catalyst to produce power.

While these cars boast the merits of being quick to refuel and retaining long-range, further development has been hindered by increasing costs and sparse fuelling stations. But BMW still hopes that by 2028, infrastructure will have considerably developed.
