Black Stars begin 2025 AFCON qualifying campaign against Angola

Ghana’s Black Stars will aim to kickstart their redemption arc from a dismal 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign when they face Angola in a crucial qualifier on Thursday (5 September) at the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi.

The four-time African champions suffered a humiliating group-stage exit in the last edition of the tournament, failing to win a single game. But with the 2025 AFCON on the horizon, the Black Stars will be eager to restore their continental pride.

Their journey to qualify for the tournament begins at home against Angola, who reached the quarterfinals in the previous edition.

Samuel Uwikunda from Rwanda will officiate the encounter, assisted by fellow countrymen Dieudonne Mutuyimana and Eric Mugabo.

Ruzindana Nsoro will be the fourth official. Sanusi Mohammed from Nigeria is the match commissioner, while Elsayed Morad Attaalla from Egypt is the referee assessor.

Otto Addo’s side will be looking to make their 25th appearance at the AFCON finals.

However, they face stiff competition from Angola, Niger and Sudan in Group F. Victory against the Palancas Negras would be a significant step towards achieving that goal and ending Ghana’s 43-year wait for an AFCON title.

The Black Stars head into the game in a buoyant mood after consecutive wins over Mali and the Central African Republic in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in June.

Following their game against Angola, the Black Stars will next take on Niger away from home on Monday (9 September).
