In a momentous welcome ceremony held in Nsawam, the presidential candidate of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mahamudu Bawumia, was honoured with the title “Nana Ntentankesehene,” meaning “the King of the Internet,” by the chief of Nsawam.
This unique title recognises Bawumia’s exceptional influence in leveraging digital technology to transform Ghana’s socio-economic landscape.
The coronation ceremony, steeped in tradition and cultural symbolism, took place during Bawumia’s visit to the Nsawam Traditional Area.
The chief of Nsawam, known for his foresight in blending tradition with modernity, bestowed the title upon Bawumia in recognition of his efforts to modernise Ghana’s economy through digitalisation.
Bawumia, often referred to as the “Digital Man,” has spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at integrating digital technology into various facets of Ghanaian life. From the introduction of the mobile money interoperability system, which has revolutionised financial transactions, to the digital addressing system and the digitization of government services, his influence on the country’s digital transformation is undeniable.
In his address, the Nsawam chief remarked, “In today’s world, he who has control over the internet rules over the world. Bawumia’s vision and leadership in bringing digital solutions to our everyday problems have made him not just a leader in Ghana, but a global figure in the digital space. As the Ntentankesehene, you are now recognized as the guardian of our digital future.”
The title “Ntentankesehene” is a blend of tradition and innovation. “Ntentan,” the Akan word for “spider web,” is often associated with the internet’s intricate and far-reaching networks, while “kesehene” denotes a great or paramount king. This symbolic title reflects the belief that control over digital networks equates to significant influence, echoing the sentiment that the internet is a critical infrastructure for economic and social power.
In accepting the title, Bawumia expressed his deep gratitude and reiterated his commitment to using digital technology to enhance the lives of Ghanaians. “The internet and digital technology are the tools of the future. As Nana Ntentankesehene, I will continue to work towards ensuring that Ghana leads the way in Africa’s digital revolution,” he said.
Dr. Bawumia’s coronation as the “King of the Internet” not only honors his contributions to Ghana’s digital advancement but also highlights the growing recognition of the internet’s role in shaping the future of nations. His leadership in this domain is a testament to the power of digital innovation in driving economic growth and improving governance.
As Ghana continues to navigate the complexities of the digital age, the coronation of Dr. Bawumia as Nana Ntentankesehene serves as a powerful reminder of the critical importance of digital leadership in the modern world. The title affirms his position as a key figure in Ghana’s ongoing digital transformation and underscores the country’s commitment to embracing the opportunities and challenges of the internet age.
