ARTICLE: The legacy of S D Dombo: “Dombo for NPP” will work to get Bawumia elected as the next president of Ghana

Allow me to share a story guaranteed to warm your heart. One that transcends politics and captures the very essence of any great nation. A tale of unity, purpose and an unflinching commitment to progress, giving context to the grace with which Dr Mahamudu Bawumia carries himself today as a politician.

It all began on 3 March 1923 in a village called Duori in what is now the Upper West Region of Ghana. The birth of Simon Diedong Dombo. A person whose extraordinary acts of selflessness, courage leadership left an indelible mark on Ghana’s history.

Enskinned by his uncle Chief Bodire who overlooked his biological sons and chose Dombo as his successor. Only the beginning of the greatness that is Chief S D Dombo.

Delving into the world of politics, Chief S D Dombo co-founded and led the Northern People’s Party, representing northern Ghana and contributing to the independence movement.

He served on the Gold Coast Legislative Council and became Ghana’s first official opposition leader even enduring incarceration twice without trial.

After the Northern People’s Party merged with other opposition groups to form the United Party (UP), Dombo was elected deputy leader, with Dr Busia as the party leader. Generations later, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, now Vice President, is running for the highest office in Ghana.

He comes from a village in the Northern part of the country, similar to that of Dombo. Reflecting on Dombo’s legacy and values, Dr Bawumia decided to return to his roots to seek the blessing and support of Dombo’s family, the family of the man who once led the entire North from which they both hail.

Within the now expansive, ever growing and diverse Dombo family, the vice president’s exceptional leadership qualities are reminiscent, though not quite identical to those of their ancestor Dombo.

The Dombos, led by his youngest daughter, Tracy Rabiatu Dombo, and great-granddaughter Dr Ekua Fowah Amoakoh, are determined to make Dr Bawumia the president of Ghana, much like their chief once led.

This mission resulted in the formation of the Dombos for Bawumia movement, which was officially inaugurated in Duori on Saturday 22 July 2024. It was a demonstration of loyalty and commitment to the “break the 8” cause.

Dr Ekua Fowah Amoakoh remarked, “As my great-grandfather pursued his vision, sacrificing all else for the national interest, I believe Dr Mahamudu Bawumia recognizes the future direction of the world and is committed to ensuring that Ghana is counted among the greats.

Just as Dombo paved the way, I believe His Excellency Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, with our help and unwavering support, will enter the Jubilee House as a great leader, leaving the door open for us to follow.”

The story continues as the past meets the present and into the future. The story of unity and cementing their place in history as changemakers, visionaries and statesmen above all.
