CAF president Patrice Motsepe says appropriate actions will be taken after an investigation into the postponed 2025 African Cup of Nations qualifier between Libya and Nigeria.
The match scheduled for 13 October 2024 did not go ahead after the Super Eagles’ decision to boycott the fixture following reports of unpleasant treatment in Libya.
Nigeria, which was initially scheduled to land in Benghazi, had its flight diverted from its intended destination to Al Labraq.
The players and team officials were reportedly left stranded at the airport for over 12 hours, and the players voiced their concerns on social media over the treatment they received.
“I want to emphasize a principle that we will not tolerate because this is something that has been going on for quite some time.
Let me emphasize, forget about the Nigeria and Libya situation because that process has been properly investigated and appropriate action will be taken.”- Motsepe said at a congress.
Motsepe also stressed the need for sportsmanship on the continent.
“I’ve heard too many stories of a football club or a national team going to a country, you spend hours at the airport. They ask you about documents that don’t exist, and, during COVID, they would look at who the best players are from your national team and say, those 10 players, they’ve got COVID.”
“I just want to repeat we’re reviewing those laws, and we want to emphasize sportsmanship when a national team from another country visits, or a football club visits, treat them with the dignity and respect that they deserve, and if there are violations of those regulations and those rules, we will take action”
The LFF had earlier complained about the treatment of their players and officials on arrival in Nigeria for a qualifier in Uyo last week, which saw their flight land hours away from the match venue and the players endured long travel delays.
Nigeria won that match 1-0 and are in pole position to qualify for the Cup of Nations finals that will be staged in Morocco late next year. The top two teams in each qualification pool advance to the finals.
