Deputy Attorney General Diana Asonaba Dapaah has addressed concerns raised by Ghanaians regarding the government’s handling of recent protests against illegal mining, commonly referred to as galamsey. Following the arrest of several protesters, critics have questioned the government’s commitment to upholding citizens’ rights. Dapaah reassured the public that President Nana Akufo-Addo, a respected lawyer and leader, is dedicated to protecting the rights of all Ghanaians.
In an exclusive interview with Kwame Adinkra on Pure FM monitored by MyNewsGH.com, Dapaah stated, “President Akufo-Addo is not an authoritarian leader. He believes in freedom of expression and respects the rights of every citizen.” Her comments come in the wake of escalating tensions surrounding the arrests of demonstrators, who have voiced their concerns over the government’s policies on illegal mining.
Dapaah further emphasized that the unfortunate incidents involving the demonstrators could have been avoided if they had adhered to their constitutional rights while fulfilling their responsibilities. “It’s important to remember that rights come with responsibilities. If the protesters had followed the lawful processes, the situation might have been different,” she explained.
As she discussed the framework of governance in Ghana, Dapaah highlighted the importance of rule of law in maintaining order within the society. “In a nation governed by laws, anyone who breaches those laws will face the appropriate consequences,” she stated firmly. This assertion reinforces the government’s stance on the need for accountability, regardless of the circumstances.
Throughout the interview, Dapaah’s message was clear: the government is committed to ensuring that rights are protected, but citizens must also recognize their responsibilities in exercising those rights. “We have a duty to uphold our laws and respect the processes in place,” she added, urging Ghanaians to engage in peaceful and lawful demonstrations.
