Ghanaian football legend Abedi Pele marked his 60th birthday on Tuesday (5 November), as fans, former clubs, and footballing bodies celebrated the remarkable career of a man regarded as one of Africa’s greatest players.
From his early days dazzling crowds with his skill at Real Tamale United to his peak as a three-time African Footballer of the Year and Ligue 1 champion, Abedi Ayew Pele’s legacy is woven into the fabric of African football.
He became the youngest member of the Black Stars squad to lift the 1982 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) and has since inspired generations both in Ghana and across the continent.
Tributes poured in from across the football world, with the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Olympique de Marseille, and the Professional Footballers Association of Ghana (PFAG) joining in to celebrate the milestone.
“Happy Birthday to the Maestro, Abedi Ayew Pele. A true legend and an inspiration to generations of Ghanaian footballers,” PFAG wrote on X (formerly Twitter), capturing the admiration felt by his fellow professionals.
Real Tamale United (RTU), the club where Abedi Pele first caught the nation’s eye, paid their respects on social media as well.
“Happy 60th Birthday, Abedi Pele! From his early days dazzling fans at Real Tamale United to becoming an African football icon, Abedi Pele has inspired generations. Here’s to celebrating a true legend of RTU and world football!”
