The government is working to contain the chieftaincy conflict in Bawku, the government spokesperson on security and governance, Palgrave Boakye-Danquah has said.
Violence erupted once again in Bawku as a renewed chieftaincy conflict claimed multiple lives, including an 11-year-old girl who was killed in her home.
In a series of related incidents, three individuals were gunned down near the Ghana Highways Authority office on Sunday (27 October).
Reports from the region indicate that since the outbreak of shooting on Saturday (26 October), the death toll has risen to approximately 15, with 20 others sustaining various degrees of injury.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Tuesday (29 October), Boakye-Danquah said the situation in Bawku is a localised situation adding that there are enough measures in place to counter any threat of terrorism from neighbouring countries.
“The threats against Ghana are real. However, we have enough robust men from the security services and we have enough intelligence to be able to counter any threat whatsoever that will come from our neighbouring country.”
“And so, I assure the Ghanaian people that what is happening in Bawku is localized, it’s a chieftaincy issue of one that has been enskinned legally and one that has been enskinned illegally, it’s localised and we will be able to contain it,” Boakye Danquah said.
