The National Democratic Congress (NDC) is facing growing discontent among its supporters following events surrounding the Techiman South parliamentary elections.
Many party supporters have expressed feelings of betrayal, accusing the leadership of failing to protect their votes and allowing what they describe as an injustice to persist.
The controversy stems from the 2020 parliamentary election in Techiman South, where Christopher Bayere Basongti of the NDC was initially declared the winner by some provisional results. However, the tides shifted when a court-ordered recount of votes favoured Martin Adjei Mensah Korsah of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
The recount at the Electoral Commission’s regional office in Accra confirmed Korsah as the victor with 46,663 votes, surpassing Basongti’s 43,429.
Supporters of the NDC felt blindsided by the legal and political manoeuvres that unfolded. They had been confident in Basongti’s victory and expected the party’s leadership to take decisive action to ensure he was sworn in.
One aggrieved supporter lamented, “We were promised that our candidate’s win would be upheld no matter what, but now it feels like our efforts and trust were for nothing.”
Adding to the disillusionment was the moment Basongti’s name was omitted during the swearing-in of Members of Parliament on January 6.
NDC supporters who had travelled to Accra for the occasion were left stunned and infuriated. Some accused party leaders of colluding with the NPP, alleging that bribes might have been exchanged to secure Korsah’s seat in Parliament.
“This is a betrayal of the highest order,” declared another supporter. “We fought for this party with our blood and sweat, only to be ignored when it mattered most. If the leadership cannot stand by us, why should we stand by them?”
The accusations and mounting frustration have led to threats of abandoning the party entirely. Supporters from Techiman South have vowed to reassess their loyalty, warning that their dissatisfaction could impact the NDC’s performance in future elections.
In response, calls have grown louder for the party to address the concerns of its grassroots supporters.
Some analysts suggest that the NDC leadership must engage in transparent communication and rebuild trust to prevent further alienation. The party, however, has yet to issue a comprehensive statement addressing the claims of betrayal and the growing unrest among its base.
