Black Stars head coach Otto Addo has acknowledged the challenge ahead after Ghana was drawn alongside Angola, Sudan and Niger in Group F for the 2025 TotalEnergies Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.
The draw, conducted on Thursday (4 July), presents a clear path to the finals in Morocco for the Ghanaians, who will need to finish in the top two of the group to progress.
However, Addo insists there will be no easy games. “We believe in ourselves to qualify from this group but it’s going to be tough,” he said after the draw.
Addo then offered specific insights into each opponent. He highlighted Angola’s strong showing at the ongoing Council of Southern Africa Football Associations (COSAFA) Cup and their impressive World Cup qualifying draw against Cameroon. “They have a strong squad and we can’t take it easy,” he warned.
Ghana’s clash with Sudan adds a personal touch, as their current coach, Kwasi Appiah, is a former Black Stars boss and current Ghana Football Association (GFA) executive committee member.
“It’s going to be a really big challenge,” Addo said. “To beat them and for this, we have to be at 100% best.”
“I am excited to play against them, and like I said, it’s going to be tough. It’s not easy but we have a strong team and we surely can beat them.”
Niger, despite their recent struggles, also drew Addo’s attention. “They don’t have a good record in their last five, six, seven, eight matches. I think they won one, played some draws and lost the other games, but what you can see is that, when they lost, they just lost by a lone goal,” he observed. “So, it’s going to be tough.”
Emphasising the continent’s growing competitiveness, Addo concluded. “There is no small team in Africa at the moment. You saw at the last AFCON that very, very strong and known teams had problems with the so-called unknown teams so it’s going to be tough but I think we have the quality to beat all of them. But it’s going to be close; it’s going to be tough; there are no easy games.”
The qualifiers for the 2025 TotalEnergies AFCON qualifiers kick off in September 2024.
