Two distinguished scientists from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) will represent Ghana at the upcoming United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) Science Summit in New York on September 19, 2024.
The event will provide a global platform for discussions on science and innovation aimed at addressing key global challenges.
Professor Alexander Yaw Debrah, Dean of the Faculty of Allied Health Sciences at KNUST, will deliver a presentation titled, “How North-South Research Collaboration Contributes to the Achievement of SDG Target 3: Ensure Healthy Lives and Promote Well-Being for All at All Ages.”
His presentation will focus on improving the identification and management of lymphatic filariasis (LF) cases in Ghana, particularly conditions like elephantiasis and hydrocele.
He will highlight the role of innovative mobile reporting systems used by Community Health Volunteers (CHVs) to enhance reporting accuracy for neglected tropical diseases (NTDs). His research supports the World Health Organization’s NTD Agenda 2030 and the achievement of Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 3.
Dr. (Mrs.) Linda Batsa Debrah, a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Clinical Microbiology at KNUST, will serve as the moderator of Session B titled, “The Future of Researchers’ Global Health Career in Africa: Challenges and Opportunities.” She will also present on the topic, “Resource-Limited Setting: Challenges in Conducting Clinical Research,” focusing on the difficulties faced by early-career researchers in low- and middle-income countries.
Her talk will address challenges related to funding, infrastructure, and skill acquisition, while offering strategies for overcoming these barriers to foster scientific innovation in Africa.
The UNGA Science Summit is a premier global event that brings together leading scientists, policymakers, and innovators to address pressing scientific and technological challenges.
The 2024 Summit will focus on topics such as climate action, One Health, artificial intelligence, biodiversity, and clean energy, with special attention on the Africa Science Leadership Coalition, promoting African leadership in science policy.
