Three Ghanaians have been named as part of the top 10 most powerful blacks in the United Kingdom (UK).
They are Bernard Mensah of International Bank of America, Afua Kyei of the Bank of England and Joshua Siaw of law firm White & Case.
Personalities for the 18-year-old Powerlist are chosen for their “ability to change lives and alter events, as demonstrated over a protracted period of time and in a positive manner”.
The annual Powerlist was first published in 2007, with its aim to provide role models for young black people, according to Powerful Media.
Forbes takes the place of British Vogue editor-in-chief Edward Enninful at the head of the list.
The top 10 of the Powerlist for 2025 is:

3. Afua Kyei, chief financial officer at the Bank of England
4. Emma Grede, chief executive at fashion brand Good American

8. Adejoke Bakare, chef-owner at Michelin-starred restaurant Chishuru
9. Justin Onuekwusi, fund manager at St. James’s Place
10. Pamela Maynard, chief AI transformation officer at Microsoft
About Afua Kyei
Formerly at Barclays Bank, 36-years-old Afua Kyei made history as the first black senior executive in the Bank of England’s 329-year history when she was appointed Chief Financial Officer and Executive Director in 2019.
In her position, she handles developing the bank’s strategy and financial governance, serving as the bank’s co-executive sponsor for Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, and co-executive sponsor for Climate Change disclosure.
In 2021, at the Women in Finance Awards UK, the Oxford University alumnus was honoured as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Year.
About Joshua Siaw
A legal luminary, Joshua Siaw is a Global law firm White & Case LLP partner and director of the firm’s Africa Practice.
In January this year, he was appointed co-chair of the UK government’s Africa Investors Group (AIG), an advisory council established by the Theresa May-led government to facilitate increased trade and investment between the UK and Africa. This was after he was selected as the only lawyer to join the prime minister on her 2018 historic trade mission to Africa.
In 2019, he was given the third highest British Empire award, MBE, by Her Majesty, the late, Queen Elizabeth II, to recognise his services as a lawyer and his contributions to UK legal services and UK trade and investment in Africa.
Bernard Mensah is President of International for Bank of America and is a member of Bank of America’s Executive Management Team.
He is also the Chief Executive Officer of Merrill Lynch International, Bank of America’s largest international subsidiary.
Based in London, Bernard is responsible for the development and execution of Bank of America’s strategy and extensive business activities internationally. These span corporate, commercial and investment banking, sales and trading, research and treasury services and associated support and control functions.
He is also responsible for ensuring the effective delivery of the broad Bank of America franchise to its corporate and institutional clients internationally. Prior to assuming his current position in 2020, he jointly led the bank’s fixed income, currencies and commodities trading business globally.
He joined the firm in 2010 from Goldman Sachs in London, where he was a Partner and global head of Bank Loan and Distressed Trading, and prior to that ran the bank’s Asia Credit and Convertibles business, based in Hong Kong and Tokyo.
Bernard co-chairs the Africa Advisory Board of The King’s Trust International and is a member of the board of the Kofi Annan Foundation, a not-for-profit organisation that promotes better global governance to achieve a fairer, more peaceful world.
He is a member of the Stanford University Parents and Family Advisory Board, and previously served as Co-Chair.
