Former Member of Parliament for Asante Akyem North, Andy Kwame Appiah-Kubi, has called on President John Dramani Mahama to carefully evaluate the practicalities of his governance promises as he embarks on his presidency.
The NPP stalwart encouraged Mahama to prioritize the nation’s needs over campaign rhetoric, especially concerning the size of his government.
“Let Mr. Mahama consider that campaign message as a presidential candidate then. Now he is our President, let him think presidential,” Appiah-Kubi said during an interview on TV3’s The KeyPoints.
He emphasized that while Mahama’s promise to limit his cabinet to 60 ministers resonated during the campaign, the realities of governance may require adjustments.
“If for any reason he thinks that Ghana cannot do with 60 ministers, let him do what is good for the country,” he added.
Appiah-Kubi drew comparisons to former President John Agyekum Kufuor, who encountered similar challenges upon assuming office.
“I cited also President Kufuor, who before he became President, gave out certain indices. He came to be a President, and the realities dawned on him—that what he was talking about in his capacity as a presidential candidate was different from what he was seeing in his seat as President,” he explained.
During his campaign, Mahama championed the idea of a lean government, a move that was widely lauded by many who viewed it as a step towards efficient governance.
Appiah-Kubi acknowledged the appeal of such a policy, stating, “Indeed, bringing us a lean government is a policy that I admired and respect, but let us not hold him to it.”
