Sven-Göran Eriksson, the pioneering football manager who became the first foreigner to coach England’s national men’s team, has died at the age of 76.
Eriksson passed away peacefully at home on Monday (26 August), surrounded by his family.
In January, Eriksson disclosed that he had been diagnosed with terminal cancer and was given a prognosis of one year to live.
His death marks the end of a storied managerial career that spanned more than four decades and left a lasting impact on European football.
Eriksson’s career began in Sweden, where he took the reins at Degerfors IF before moving on to IFK Göteborg.
At just 30 years old, he led Göteborg to both the Swedish title and the UEFA Cup in 1982, quickly establishing himself as a managerial force.
His success in Sweden caught the attention of Benfica, where he won two league titles and reached the UEFA Cup final in 1983.
Though Benfica were narrowly defeated by Anderlecht, Eriksson’s reputation continued to grow, leading to stints with Roma and Fiorentina.
He returned to Benfica in 1989, securing another league title and guiding the team to the European Cup final in 1990, where they were defeated by Milan.
Eriksson’s most significant triumph came with Lazio, where he secured the Serie A title in 2000, only the second in the club’s history.
Backed by Lazio’s wealthy president Sergio Cragnotti, Eriksson built a formidable team, cementing his legacy as one of the most influential managers in Italian football.
Eriksson’s tenure as England manager, though often scrutinised, saw the Three Lions reach the quarterfinals of three consecutive major tournaments.
His tactical acumen and calm demeanour left a lasting impression on the international stage.
Sven-Göran Eriksson’s death marks the end of an era for football. His contributions to the sport will be remembered by fans and players alike.
