Sustainability Conference 2024: Fidelity Bank, B&FT partner to encourage bold action, purposeful collaboration for a sustainable future

The 2024 Sustainability Summit, powered by the Business and Financial Times and the Fidelity Bank, served as a platform to drive real change, set actionable goals, and build a future where economic growth and environmental protection coexist harmoniously.

In his opening remarks, Julian Opuni, managing director of Fidelity Bank Ghana, highlighted the importance of bold action and purposeful collaboration for environmental and economic sustainability.

He emphasised that the journey towards sustainability cannot be undertaken alone, and urged collaboration across industries, sectors and communities.

“Building a greener future requires that we bring together diverse voices and perspectives across industries, sectors, and communities. Whether through public-private partnerships, engaging with NGOs, or co-creating with innovators, we must recognise that our collective efforts are the key to success.”

“It is our mandate to be part of that rejuvenation process and to ensure that the next generation, your children, and your grandchildren are happy that you contributed to a worthwhile future; they had the resources and policies in place to give them the future they deserve,” he said at the 2024 Sustainability Summit.

The 2024 Sustainability Summit, is held under the theme “Ensuring Environmental and Economic Sustainability: Collaborating for a Greener Future.”

As climate change continues to disrupt agricultural productivity, particularly in regions like Africa that are highly dependent on agriculture, the need for innovative strategies to build resilience has never been more urgent.

The general manager of Jospong Group, Glenn Kwabena Gyimah also emphasised on the importance of recycling and the role his company is playing to ensure it sustainability.

“Now, we all know the role of the Zoom Lion. They often are out in public places, gathering all of our waste from homes, institutions, public places, communities, and the industries. They ensure that they are safely transported to various facilities for proper management. And as a result of the systems that they have put in place over there, at least we are able to recover some materials that can be reused and can also be sent to some of the industries for further processing.”

He added, “At the same time, we also can understand the fact that there’s a lot of investment done by the Jospong Group towards the development of waste treatment facilities. The common one that we can all easily talk about is the Acara Compost and Recycling Plant.”

Michael Tuffuor, a lecturer at the University of Environment and Sustainable Development, also believes that climate change should be included in school curricula.

“So, it should be a compulsory course, one way or the other, I expect people, of course, to agree. It should be a course that you need to pass.”

“And in the course of that, we can’t reach out to many people because the times have changed. And we need to change our attitudes and all that. We do some environmental studies at junior high school and senior high school, but I don’t think it’s enough.”

He also mentioned that we should be aware of some of the sustainability courses that we take, such as food security and so on, and programmes that are directly related to climate change.

“A lot of universities do it, though. But I think for many of the universities, we need to make sure that it’s now becoming part of the major courses that we do. Probably somehow we’ll do economics or sociology or something.”
