Black Stars venue crisis resolved as CAF approves Accra Sports Stadium for Sudan clash
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has approved the Accra Sports Stadium as the venue for Ghana’s upcoming TotalEnergies 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier against Sudan.
The Black Stars will face Sudan on Thursday (10 October), for Matchday 3 of the qualifiers.
This decision follows CAF’s earlier directive for the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to find an alternative venue after temporarily revoking the Baba Yara Stadium’s approval.
Otto Addo announces 25-man squad for crucial AFCON Qualifiers
Black Stars head coach, Otto Addo, has named a 25-man squad for the doubleheader against Sudan in the AFCON 2025 qualifiers.
The squad sees the return of key defenders Alexander Djiku and Gideon Mensah, who were both absent from the team’s previous fixtures against Angola and Niger.
Djiku of Fenerbahçe and Auxerre’s Mensah will reinforce Ghana’s defence as they prepare to host Sudan in Accra before travelling to face them again in Libya on Tuesday (15 October) at the Martyrs of Benina Stadium.
Frederick Lartey Otu joins Commonwealth Taekwondo Union council
In other sports news, Frederick Lartey Otu, President of the Ghana Taekwondo Federation (GTF), has been elected to the Commonwealth Taekwondo Union (CTU) council.
His election took place during the World Taekwondo General Assembly in South Korea. Otu’s extensive experience in global taekwondo administration makes him a valuable addition to the CTU as it campaigns for the inclusion of the sport in future Commonwealth Games, where taekwondo has yet to feature.
Senegal part ways with AFCON-winning coach Aliou Cisse
Aliou Cisse’s tenure as head coach of Senegal’s national football team has come to an end after nearly a decade in charge.
The 48-year-old, who led Senegal to their first-ever AFCON title in 2022, has been relieved of his duties just days before the next round of 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
Despite leading Senegal to success, including last month’s qualifiers against Burkina Faso and Burundi, the country’s sports ministry has decided not to renew his contract.
SESSA Games Relaunched After Decade-Long Break
After a ten-year hiatus, the Security Services Sports Association (SESSA) Games have been relaunched.
The Games, which were initially established in 1987 to bring together Ghana’s security services in athletic competition, have historically played a key role in developing talent for national sports teams.
The 2024 edition will kick off with the SESSA Athletics Open Championship, set to take place on 2–3 November at the University of Ghana Sports Stadium.
The event marks a new chapter in Ghana’s security service sporting tradition, promising to rekindle the competitive spirit that has produced many national sports heroes.
