President Nana Akufo-Addo has praised himself for maintaining Ghana’s peace and stability, despite the security challenges that faced many of its West African neighbours during his tenure in office.
He noted that with several countries in the region grappled with terrorist threats, Ghana has managed to stay resilient, a feat that Akufo-Addo attributes to careful leadership and the dedication of the nation’s security forces.
“I have led this country through many trials, but I can proudly say that Ghana has remained largely insulated from the threat of terrorism that has affected many of our neighbours,” Akufo-Addo declared in his final State of the Nation Address (SONA).
The president emphasized that Ghana’s resilience was not by chance but by design, underscoring the importance of proactive measures and strategic policies that prioritized national security.
He thanked the country’s security agencies, whose vigilance and professionalism have been instrumental in maintaining peace.
Expressing his gratitude, Akufo-Addo said, “I must thank our security forces, whose exceptional professionalism and commitment to their duties have helped us to maintain the peace we enjoy today.”
His words highlighted the indispensable role that Ghana’s armed forces and police have played in safeguarding the nation, particularly in a region increasingly threatened by extremism and instability.
However, while Ghana has largely managed to steer clear of external threats, Akufo-Addo did not shy away from addressing internal conflicts that continue to hinder the nation’s progress.
The president specifically pointed to the ongoing chieftaincy disputes, with the conflict in Bawku serving as a painful example of the internal tensions still at play.
“The situation in Bawku is a matter of great concern,” he said somberly, reflecting on the impact of the conflict on the affected communities. “This must come to an end, and I am hopeful that we will find a permanent resolution to such chieftaincy disputes that threaten our unity.”
