National Democratic Congress (NDC) stalwart Sam George has shared his concerns about the ongoing controversy surrounding Ghana’s National Cathedral project in a recent appearance on Channel One TV’s “Face To Face” show monitored by MyNewsGH.com.
His critique was particularly aimed at Dag Heward-Mills, the founder and Presiding Bishop of the United Denominations Originating from the Lighthouse Group of Churches, who has faced scrutiny as a member of the Cathedral’s Board of Trustees.
During the discussion hosted by Umaru Sanda, George highlighted the impressive architectural achievements of Heward-Mills, emphasizing that the bishop has constructed remarkable buildings with considerably less funding than what was used to create the ‘hole’ meant to symbolise the construction of the national cathedral.
This stark contrast raises questions about the management and execution of a project that has been fraught with allegations of corruption and mismanagement.
Hon Sam George stated, “If Dag Heward-Mills could achieve such remarkable results with relatively modest financial resources, it is troubling that he is associated with what he described as a major scandal.”
The lawmaker also drew attention to the staggering financial discrepancies associated with the national cathedral. He pointed out that the construction of the Ecobank headquarters, a striking example of modern architecture, was completed for under $30 million.
In contrast, a ‘hole’ dug to commence the national cathedral project reportedly cost $54 million, yet it has only resulted in a mere excavation site. This glaring inefficiency has led many to question how funds are being utilized and whether there is accountability within the project’s management.
Nana Akufo-Addo, the President of Ghana, decided to build the National Cathedral as a way to fulfill what he described as a national promise to God.
In various speeches, he shared his belief that a national cathedral would serve as a symbol of the country’s commitment to Christianity, reflecting Ghana’s religious heritage and values. He views the project as a means of fostering unity among Ghanaians and promoting spiritual development.
The decision to construct the cathedral also stems from the idea of providing a central place of worship that can accommodate national events, state functions, and other religious gatherings.
The President emphasized the need for a space that would honour God and facilitate the country’s moral and spiritual growth. Furthermore, the cathedral is intended to serve as a historical monument, celebrating Ghana’s identity and culture while also attracting tourists and visitors.
