The President of the Catholic Bishops Conference, Matthew Kwasi Gyamfi, has warned presidential and parliamentary candidates to respect the decisions of the Ghanaian electorate and avoid using threats of violence before, during, and after the upcoming elections.
Gyamfi, who is also the Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sunyani, emphasised the importance of protecting the country’s democratic processes.
He made these remarks during a speech at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Bono Ahafo Catholic Cooperative Society (BACCSOD) in Wenchi, Bono Region, on Friday (29 November).
In his address, he underscored the significance of the peace pact, which all presidential candidates have signed, committing to national unity and responsible campaigning.
“Haven’t you seen [John] Mahama, [Mahamudu] Bawumia, and other presidential candidates signing the peace pact? This shows that they are committed to ensuring peace,” he reiterated.
Gyamfi pointed out that the real challenge lies with constituents who, at times, cause disturbances during the election period.
He questioned, “If the people truly want peace, why then would someone snatch a ballot box and run away?”
He issued a strong warning against any form of electoral violence leading up to the 2024 presidential and parliamentary elections and urged the security agencies to take firm action against anyone attempting to disrupt the peace.
Seidu Haruna, Member of Parliament (MP) for Wenchi constituency, also joined the call for peace, urging everyone to refrain from violence.
“Anyone planning to cause trouble should abandon such intentions immediately,” he stated.
He further advised the youth not to give in to incitement, encouraging them to refuse and instead tell those instigating violence to send their own children.
