Owner of Capital Bank, others granted a presidential pardon

Former CEO of the defunct Capital Bank, William Ato Essien, has been granted a presidential pardon by outgoing President Nana Akufo-Addo.

Essien, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison in December 2023 for his role in the collapse of Capital Bank, had faced serious financial and legal repercussions for his actions.

In addition to the prison sentence, Essien was ordered to pay GHS 90 million as part of the restitution process. However, after making partial payments, he was unable to fulfil the remaining balance, which led to his imprisonment.

In a statement released by the presidency, the decision to grant Essien a pardon comes amid concerns over his health.

Essien has been suffering from severe, life-threatening medical conditions and has undergone multiple surgeries in recent times.

His health situation was taken into consideration as part of the review process, with calls for compassionate measures to be taken due to the ex-CEO’s deteriorating condition.
