President of IMANI Africa, Franklin Cudjoe has mounted a strong defence for one Afia Pokua who Chiefs reprimanded in the Ashanti Region.
He believes that the demeaning treatment meted out to the radio and television personality confirms what she said about the Ashanti Kingdom may be true.
Franklin Cudjoe was reacting to reports on Afia Pokua’s engagement with the chiefs when she was at the palace to apologise for her actions.
To him, the Chiefs, their description used on the lady and their condescending tones and words may have confirmed the position held by the lady that they think themselves as better persons than other people of other tribes.
“This happened in Ghana? Obviously the the lady was angry about the tendency for some to assume they are more special than others yet seek help from everyone to fix themselves some times. I like the reference she made to the universal begging for money to fix the neglected and wasting Komfo Anokye Hospital, a hospital named after the revered and powerful Ashanti spiritual priest who allegedly commanded a golden stool from the sky.
Now reading what the subchiefs of the very wise and globally respected Asantehene said to the lady made me wonder if aspects of what the ladÿ said was all wrong. Until I hear directly from the wiser King of Asantes on the matters I say that let’s all refrain from making ethnocentric statements and certainly not seek to politicise the matter because frankly this incident doesn’t compare to the aggressive ecological homicide being committed on our major rivers and forests with the tacitly callous approval of the government and collusion of some Chiefs who the Asantehene has destooled.
No political party has denigrated Asantes. However I know one political party that sat and looked unconcerned, possibly participated in the grand plot to deliberately disenfranchise my SALL so as to benefit electorally–which is partly why I understand what Afia Pokua said about respect for all ethnic groups.–Franklin Cudjoe Founding President and CEO of IMANI Africa,” he said.
What Afia Pokua Said
On Accra-based Onua TV hosted by Mona Gucci, Pokua expressed her frustration with what she sees as Ashantis proving superiority over other tribes.
She could not fathom why the Asantehene has refused to act on it.
“Asante is not the whole of Ghana. If you are only thinking about Asante, they can amend the laws so that you can separate yourself from the rest of the country,” she told Mona Gucci earlier in September 2024.
Afia Pokua’s Apology
In the company of some management members of Media General, Mona Gucci and some other panelists on the show, Afia Pokua apologised to the chiefs. However, her apology was rejected by the chiefs, who denigrated her with some unprintable words. This was after they had apologized on the show.
