Opinion: Are we practicing true democracy or a lopsided one?

The just-ended presidential and parliamentary elections have been rocked by violence from some irate members of the National Democratic Congress (NDC).

These thugs associated with the NDC have resorted to intimidations, beatings, and coercion of EC officials to declare NDC parliamentary candidates winners when there is clear evidence that they lost to their New Patriotic Party (NPP) counterparts.

This agenda appears to have been a well-rehearsed and orchestrated campaign to use force to erase the victories chalked up by the candidates representing the NPP.

Patrick Boamah, Akua Afriyie, Mike Oquaye Jr, Abanga Yakubu, and a host of other NPP candidates who won their seats have been given raw deals by these rampaging NDC goons.

What is so shocking is the subtle endorsement of these violent acts by the so-called neutrals who have told us they love Ghana more than the rest of us.

The so-called voices of conscience are sitting on the fence while these NPP candidates are being mistreated by the goons associated with the NDC.

When pushed to the wall, these apostles of democracy tell us the youth cannot be identified as NDC or NPP and that they could be from any of the two parties.

It is ironic how these same disciples of true democracy and freedom of expression are supporting these violent acts against innocent NPP candidates.

What we are witnessing is not a democracy. What is happening is nothing short of a coup d’état by the NDC, ably supported by these ‘wise men’ in our society.

One can clearly see that these so-called voices of truth and conscience have a common interest no matter the cost: to see NPP out of power.

May all of them be given juicy positions to satisfy their insatiable desire to see the exit of the NPP. This is a lopsided democracy. Ghana is not a truly democratic nation.
