NPP’s Ernest Kumi wins Akwatia seat; NDC challenges outcome

The Electoral Commission (EC) has declared Ernest Kumi of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the Member of Parliament-elect for the Akwatia constituency, ending a protracted and contentious electoral process.

He secured 19,269 votes, while his main opponent, Henry Yiadom Boakye of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), garnered 17,206 votes.

The announcement was made at the National Police Training School at Tesano in Accra, after multiple unsuccessful attempts to finalize the results in the Eastern Region.

Akwatia, traditionally an NPP stronghold, became a hotbed of political drama during the 7 December election. A routine collation process escalated into a highly contested affair, drawing national attention due to disputes, delays, and accusations between the NPP and NDC.

The constituency was among four constituencies—alongside Suhum, Nsawam, and Fanteakwa North—where election results were relocated to the National Police Training School in Accra for final collation.

The decision to relocate followed escalating tensions and logistical challenges in the Eastern Region, which hindered the initial collation efforts. Allegations of irregularities and fears of unrest prompted the EC to move the collation process to a neutral and secure environment.

Meanwhile, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) says it will not accept the EC’s verdict. Dr Peter Boamah Otokunor, a member of the party in an interview said the party will not accept the declaration of Mr. Kumi as the MP-elect for the Akwatia constituency in the Eastern Region.

“They don’t have a pink sheet at all; they have photocopies of what is considered the pink sheet,” he said in an interview with Joy News.
