The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) continued assertion that they did not lose the recent election but instead “gifted” victory to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) defies logic and reason.
Deputy General Secretary of the opposition NDC, Mustapha Gbande, has criticized the NPP’s refusal to accept the outcome of the elections, describing their explanations as irrational and a reflection of their inability to process the defeat.
Speaking on a Kumasi-based radio station, Mr. Gbande noted that the NPP’s ongoing attempts to discredit the NDC’s decisive victory are both “sickening” and “bizarre”.
“I have heard the NPP boasting and saying they didn’t lose the election. It is only a sick person who would say that,” he stated.
“Who goes into an election, does everything in their power to win, loses, and then claims, ‘we didn’t lose, we just didn’t win?’ You lost the election because the people voted you out, and you must come to terms with that reality.”
Addressing claims that voters in the Ashanti Region, the NPP’s stronghold, failed to show up at the polls, Mr. Gbande dismissed such explanations as unfounded.
“They are saying the Ashantis didn’t vote. That is a lie. Ashantis voted—voter turnout was over 55%, which is higher than 2020.
They voted the NPP out because the NDC earned the trust and support of Ghanaians. We ran a calculated and effective campaign, and we are now preparing to form the next government,” he asserted.
Mr. Gbande further condemned suggestions that the Ashanti Region should have overwhelmingly endorsed the NPP despite the challenges faced by Ghanaians.
“Why should Ashantis bear the brunt of suffering and blindly endorse the NPP? Do they expect an entire region to be complicit in what I would call political recklessness and failure?
That’s why they were rejected. The people of the Ashanti Region booted the NPP out and voted for the NDC.”
The NDC’s resounding victory in the presidential and parliamentary elections has been widely acknowledged, with many Ghanaians describing it as a “supreme victory”. The party now holds a significant majority in Parliament and secured a convincing margin in the presidential contest.
The President-elect is set to be sworn into office on January 7th, 2025, marking the dawn of a new administration.
