New Regions don’t bring about development – Former UDS Pro-VC replies Mahama

Respected Development professional and Founder of the Millar Open University Prof David Millar and a former Pro Vice Chancellor of the University for Development Studies(UDS) has kicked against the creation of new regions as a way of bringing development to the people, arguing that rather than regions, the creation of districts is what accelerates development.

He asserted that regions, far from promoting development, are a drain on resources that could be used for development projects and programmes.

Prof Millar made the point on Bolgatanga-based Dreamz FM in reaction to assurances given to the people of the Bawku area by the flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress NDC, John Mahama, that their request for a region will be considered when he becomes President.

“If it is to help the people, for me, it’s not the region. Create more districts. And they are even easier to create. There’s nothing wrong dividing Bawku West into two districts and Pusiga into two districts, nothing. And it is there common funds go. You can tell the Bawku people, ‘yes, good idea, [to create a] region, but if you want me to really help you, let me create more districts for you,”‘ Prof Millar argued.

He noted that John Mahama could have suggested a different means of bringing development to the people of the Bawku enclave instead of accepting the request of the people, stressing that  creating a region is a drain on resources.

“Regions are a drain. They are a drain to the resources for development. So, I think it’s not so much helpful to respond positively to every call. You can always think of alternatives,” he suggested.
