The National Democratic Congress (NDC) risks losing its stronghold in Odododiodio ahead of the 2024 elections, according to the CEO of EN Analytics, Ebenezer Nimako Nyarko.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show (ABS) on Wednesday (9 October), Nyarko linked the party’s declining influence to voter fatigue with long-serving MP Edwin Nii Lante Vanderpuye.
Nyarko’s remarks come after EN Analytics released its 2024 Parliamentary Forecast, predicting that the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) is on course to secure 96 parliamentary seats, while the NDC can count on 82 seats as safe.
However, 97 constituencies, including Odododiodio, are expected to be fiercely contested.
“One of the factors is the direction of the swing and it helps us to know where the voters are hitting towards,” Nyarko said.
“So if you look at the direction of the swing, NDC has lost ground gradually and so it has moved Odododiodio into a toss-up constituency instead of being a strong NDC constituency.”
“I think if you look at Odododiodio and Assin Central, one key thing that maybe it is beginning to emerge is that in certain areas, when MPs stay for a very long time, enthusiasm for that party drops.”
Nyarko highlighted a similar situation in Sekondi, where the NPP replaced Papa Owusu-Ankomah, an MP for two decades, with Andrew Egyapa Mercer in 2016, leading to renewed voter interest.
“One key example is Sekondi; it’s moved closer to a toss-up until [the] NPP changed the candidate from Papa Owusu-Ankomah to the current one and then there was an uptick.”
“So maybe parties have to look at being popular and then staying for a very long time and then measuring when it is time for a switchover of candidates. I think it’s a very important factor to consider,” he added.
