The controversy surrounding Afia Pokua has escalated as an elder from the Kwahu community in Manhyia has come forward, offering new insights into the situation that sparked outrage among the Ashanti people.
The young woman’s remarks about the Ashanti Kingdom on Onua TV ignited widespread backlash, and now fresh revelations suggest her defiance played a key role in the heightened tensions.
In a candid interview, the elder revealed that he had counselled Afia Pokua to demonstrate deep remorse before the chiefs at Manhyia Palace, believing that such an approach might soften their stance.
“I advised her to kneel before the elders, roll on the floor, and weep openly to show how sorry she was,” the elder recounted.
He noted that this level of humility would have likely resonated with the chiefs and elders, paving the way for a more favourable outcome.
However, Pokua refused to heed his advice.
Expressing frustration, the elder shared that he had reached out to Pokua several times, urging her to follow his counsel, but she disregarded him.
“I called her, and she didn’t even listen to me,” he lamented. He further disclosed that Pokua’s father, deeply affected by the backlash, experienced a surge in blood pressure and had sought the elder’s assistance in advocating on his daughter’s behalf.
During the proceedings at Manhyia Palace, new findings emerged that further complicated the issue.
According to the chiefs, investigations revealed that Afia Pokua is not from Kwahu as she had claimed, but rather of Frafra and Krobo descent—her father hailing from the Frafra tribe and her mother from Krobo.
This revelation added another layer to the controversy, as her misrepresented identity stirred additional scrutiny.
The Kwahu elder confirmed the chiefs’ findings, stating, “I also found out that she is not from Kwahu, but I wasn’t given the chance to speak during the meeting.” He shared that in his 29 years in Manhyia, he had never witnessed such an unusual and emotionally charged situation.
“Today took me by surprise. I have been in Manhyia for 29 years and have never seen anything like this.”
As the situation continues to unfold, Afia Pokua’s refusal to show the expected remorse and the revelation about her true heritage may further complicate efforts to resolve the matter peacefully between her and the Ashanti authorities.
The whole brouhaha started after Afia Pokua, a journalist with Agoo TV, found herself at the center of a heated controversy following her outspoken criticism of the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, over his perceived inaction in resolving disputes involving the Ashanti people and other ethnic groups, particularly the Bonos.
During her appearance on Onua FM’s Bribi Gye Gye Wo, hosted by Mona Gucci, Pokua voiced her frustration, claiming that the Ashantis often assert dominance over other tribes, and she criticized the Asantehene for not stepping in to mediate these ongoing tensions.
Her comments have sparked outrage among the Ashanti community, many of whom see the criticism as an attack on their revered traditional leader.
Several prominent figures, including sub-chiefs and queen mothers within the Ashanti Kingdom, have publicly expressed their discontent with Pokua’s remarks, defending the Asantehene’s leadership and role as a unifying figure.
Many within the community have called for a retraction and apology, stating that her comments undermine the integrity of the Ashanti Kingdom and its ruler.
