Violent clashes erupted in Kukuom, Asunafo South District, during the ongoing limited voter registration, leaving a young man battling for his life at the Sunyani Teaching Hospital. The incident, which involved gunfire at a registration center, has sparked outrage and calls for swift action from law enforcement authorities.
The clashes escalated following the arrest of Hon Collins Dauda, a member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), by the police. Reports indicate that hoodlums associated with the violence fired gunshots at the registration center, leading to injuries sustained by the young man.
In a concerning development, the National Organizer for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Boakye, known as Nana B, expressed shock over the release of vehicles used in the violent incident by the police. Nana B, in a statement shared via social media, condemned the actions of the perpetrators and called for decisive action from police leadership.
"A few days ago, two NDC MPs, Hon. Collins Dauda and Hon. Eric Opoku were reported to have led some NDC hoodlums to fire gunshots in the full glare of people at a registration centre in Kukuom, in the Asunafo South District," Nana B stated. He further highlighted his visit to the injured young man at the hospital, emphasizing the need for justice and accountability in the face of such violence.
Nana B's statement also raised concerns about the perceived impunity of the NDC in the Ahafo region, urging the police to curb violence and maintain law and order during voter registration exercises. The release of vehicles used in criminal activities, including a white Toyota Tundra and a red Toyota Hilux, has underscored the urgency of addressing the root causes of political violence and ensuring the safety of citizens participating in the electoral process.
The incident in Kukuom serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by political violence and the need for peaceful and transparent electoral processes. As Ghana prepares for the upcoming elections, it is imperative for all stakeholders, including political parties, law enforcement agencies, and civil society, to work together to prevent violence and safeguard democracy.
The call for justice and accountability in the wake of the violent clashes resonates with the broader aspirations of Ghanaians for a peaceful and inclusive electoral process. It is incumbent upon the authorities to investigate the incident thoroughly, hold the perpetrators accountable, and take proactive measures to prevent similar incidents in the future.
