Jimmy Carter, the 39th president of the United States and an international icon of empathy and peacemaking, died in peace at the age of 100. The former president, who celebrated his centennial milestone earlier this year,
died surrounded by family in his hometown of Plains, Georgia.
A Life of Service
Born on October 1, 1924, in Plains, Carter rose from humble beginnings to become a peanut farmer, naval officer,
governor, and finally, the leader of the free world. His presidency, from 1977 to 1981, was marked by significant accomplishments, including the historic Camp David Accords, in which he mediated peace between Egypt and Israel, and a deep commitment to human rights.
While his presidency was beset by many challenges, from the Iran hostage crisis to an energy crisis, Carter’s
postpresidency redefined what a former president could do. He turned the Carter Center into an instrument of
good will for peace, democracy, and public health advocacy. The Nobel Peace Prize followed in 2002 in recognition of his work on diseases like guinea worm and in conflict resolution.
A Devotion to Humanity
Carter’s life was defined by a commitment to
service. In his later years, he could be found building homes for Habitat for Humanity, teaching
Sunday school, and standing up for the downtrodden. The humility and faith that have
inspired millions around the world will live on in his legacy as a statesman and humanitarian for generations to come.
Tributes Pour In
Tributes have been flooding in from around the world as world leaders, former presidents, and citizens alike pay
respect to the profound impact left by Carter. President [current president] said the following: “Jimmy Carter
exemplified the best of America. His life of service, compassion, and humility will forever be remembered.
As former President [another name] said, “Jimmy Carter was not only a leader but a moral compass for the world. His abiding faith in humanity and hope for peace set an example we should all hope to emulate.”
A Nation in Mourning
He passed away with an era ending. The entire United States is going to be in mourning: flags will be flown half-staff, and a state funeral is planned to reflect upon the remarkable life of the iconic Jimmy Carter.
As the world looks back on Jimmy Carter’s life, one of his quotes seems especially fitting now: *”We must adjust to changing times and still hold to unchanging principles.”* His principles of kindness, fairness, and hope will remain part of his indelible legacy.
Jimmy Carter is survived by his wife of over 77 years, Rosalynn Carter, their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
