The Member of Parliament(MP for Ayawaso West Wuogon, Lydia Seyram Alhassan, has firmly denied allegations of distributing food to voters during the special voting session held on Tuesday, December 2, 2024.

Addressing the media, Mrs Alhassan dismissed the claims, emphasizing that she values her hard-earned reputation and would not engage in actions that could tarnish it.

“The campus security guard captured in the viral video claiming to have received rice and oil from me is an NDC executive. They keep tarnishing my image, but not anymore,” she stated.

The MP expressed confidence in her track record, asserting that her constituents are well aware of her contributions and developmental projects in the constituency.

“I have come too far to do anything unacceptable to convince people to vote for me,” she added, reiterating her commitment to maintaining integrity in her political career.

The controversy stems from earlier events at the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency, where reports emerged of Alhassan allegedly distributing food packs to voters during the special voting exercise. At the Legon Police Station, one of the designated voting centers, the MP and her team were reportedly seen handing out food to voters in queues.

John Dumelo, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary candidate for the constituency, was quick to criticize the act, labelling it as illegal and a violation of the Electoral Commission’s (EC) regulations.

Dumelo’s remarks intensified tensions in the constituency, already heightened by the competitive nature of the parliamentary race.

While the allegations have sparked significant debate, Lydia Alhassan remains steadfast in her denial, urging her constituents to focus on her record of service rather than unsubstantiated claims. The incident highlights the charged atmosphere of election season, where accusations and counteraccusations often take center stage.
