Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the vice president and flagbearer hopeful for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), visited the Ga Palace to seek the blessing and support of King Tackie Teiko Tsuru II and his constituents.
The visit was part of Bawumia’s outreach efforts as he strives to consolidate support ahead of the 2024 presidential elections.
Standing before the revered King and members of the Ga community, Bawumia shared a deeply personal account of his journey to the political forefront.
“With God all things are possible,” he began, a motto that has become a guiding principle for both his campaign and his life.
The slogan, adopted during a period of significant skepticism about his political future, was a response to the doubts cast upon his ability to secure the NPP’s flagbearer position.
He recalled how many, including some within his own party, believed that a candidate from the northern part of the country would struggle to ascend to the top of the NPP due to the party’s historical association with Akan leadership.
“I am from Walewale, a small town in the north, and many thought it impossible for someone like me to lead the NPP,” Bawumia reflected. “But, through hard work, faith, and determination, I overcame those obstacles, and I am here today, asking for your support as I seek to serve as your president.”
His words resonated with the audience as he spoke of the challenges he faced, both as a person from the north and as a member of the Muslim community.
For years, political analysts and critics had argued that the NPP’s support base was largely Akan-centric. The belief was that an Akan leader would always be preferred, given the party’s historical dominance in the southern regions of Ghana, particularly in Akan-speaking areas. This stereotype posed an additional hurdle for Bawumia, but it also became the fuel for his resolve.
“As a party, we have faced accusations that we are an Akan-dominated party,” Bawumia remarked. “But I stand here today as a candidate not defined by my ethnicity but by my vision for this country. I am here to show that with God’s grace and the support of all Ghanaians, including the Ga people, we can break barriers and build a stronger, united nation.”
He continued, “The task ahead is not easy, but we must remember that with perseverance, faith, and unity, everything is possible. The upcoming election is a major challenge, and I am confident that, with your support, we will succeed.”
Bawumia’s campaign, which revolves around the theme “It’s Possible,” echoes his personal story of overcoming adversity. It is a message that resonates with many Ghanaians, especially those who believe that political leadership should transcend regional and ethnic boundaries.
