In a conversation with DJ Nyaami on the SVTV YouTube channel, a US-based Ghanaian named Ali shared his incredible experiences, offering a rare glimpse into the complexities of migration and the unexpected turns his life took along the way.

Ali’s journey began in 1994 when he left Ghana with nothing but a dream of a better life.

His travels took him across several countries, including Mali, Senegal, Libya, Cuba, the Bahamas, Bermuda, Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Honduras, Belize, Guatemala, and Mexico City.

His path was marked by significant hardships, but what stood out most was his perilous trek through the desert. Lacking the proper documentation to travel legally, Ali was forced to cross the Sahara Desert on foot.

“Our vehicle broke down, and we spent more than 60 days in the desert,” he recalled, the weight of the experience still heavy in his voice.

Despite the danger and deprivation, Ali continued his journey and eventually made his way to Morocco. It was here that he found an unexpected opportunity.

“I was offered a free passage by the captain of a ship bound for Honduras,” Ali explained. This offer marked a turning point in his long journey, yet the hardships continued.

In Honduras, Ali found himself in prison, where he met several women. Over time, he became a father to three children, each with a different woman.

When asked why he didn’t marry any of them, Ali responded bluntly: “Marriage is a futile endeavour for me. It mostly benefits the woman, and I never saw it as something necessary.”

Ali’s story is a powerful reflection of the experiences many immigrants face, often enduring gruelling journeys to survive and build a better life.

His experiences in South America, where he encountered societal barriers to legal abortion, further illustrate the complexity of life as an immigrant—caught between survival and navigating cultural, legal, and personal choices.

For Ali, fatherhood came under difficult circumstances. He recounted how when he suggested that some of the women consider abortion, they refused, citing the illegality of the procedure in their home countries.
