The Ghana International School (GIS) has officially opened a newly renovated visitor’s washroom at the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, a move aimed at enhancing sanitation and challenging stigma in mental health care.
The ribbon-cutting ceremony, which took place on Thursday (21 November), highlighted the vital role that clean, well-maintained facilities play in improving patient care and fostering a more dignified environment for those seeking mental health treatment.
Dr. Kwadwo Marfo Obeng, Director of the Accra Psychiatric Hospital, spoke passionately about the significance of clean washrooms in combating the internalised stigma often faced by patients.
“I cannot help but think the conditions under which we offer treatment reinforce this idea of internalised stigma,” he said, emphasising that patients’ self-worth can be influenced by the state of the facilities they encounter.
“This idea that you have no future, that you’re worthless. You come, and it’s dirty, crowded, old, and broken down. What does that say?”
Dr. Obeng emphasised the often-overlooked importance of washrooms in mental health care. “Washrooms, although often overlooked, are very significant parts of our treatment,” he explained.
Reflecting on the hospital’s history, Dr. Obeng lamented the decline in the facility’s standards, comparing the current conditions to its earlier days when it was considered a pioneer in mental health care in Ghana.
“We were at international standards when we started, and we need to work to get back to where we began,” he said.
GIS Principal Frank Amponsah-Mensah expressed the school’s continued commitment to supporting mental health initiatives.
“We’re happy that you’ve accepted our contribution. We will be glad to maintain this partnership and continue raising funds for mental health,” he said.
“It’s something we are proud of, and we’ll keep advertising and projecting this cause to our community.”
