Ghana Premier League clubs should appoint right people, not friends – Laryea Kingston

Former Ghana international Laryea Kingston has urged Ghana Premier League clubs to ensure they hire the right coaches, not just people they can control because they are their friends.

The former Hearts of Oak winger made this statement in the hope of improving conditions for local clubs in the league.

The 2024/25 season started over the weekend with some shocks, including Hearts of Oak losing 1-0 to newly promoted Berekum Holy Stars.

"The clubs should make sure they hire the right technical persons, not just because, 'Oh, I'm friends with this coach,' or because some coaches, excuse me to say, will go and lobby for the job, and then the job will be given to them,” Laryea Kingston told Joy Sports, as monitored by footballghana.com.

“It's not about the club owners assessing the coach who is capable of doing the job, but because he's my friend, because I can control him, I'll give him that job so that I will still have influence in directing him on what to do on the pitch, meanwhile he doesn’t even come to training to watch.

“These are some of the things that, if we put in place, hiring a very good coach who knows how to do the job, not to favor him because he's my friend or because I can control him or tell him what to do, I do it. At the end of the day, I'm going to pay—sorry to say, I'm going to pay—the referee to get results."
